Looking after the people who look after others

You spend your days looking after other people

As a self-employed carer, you're the one everyone counts on. But there's no employer standing behind you, and no sick pay if you're the one who ends up unwell or injured. The work stops, yet the bills don't.

So we decided to change that.

For the first time, income protection comes built into your Personal Care Assistant Insurance. If you can't work, you'll still have money coming in while you get back on your feet. It's cover made for carers, and you won't find it anywhere else.

What having it actually changes

An income while you recover

A regular payment lands while illness or injury keeps you off work, so the everyday costs stay covered.

The sick pay you never had

Self-employed carers don't get paid when they're off poorly. This is the cushion the job has always been missing.

Only with Mark Bates

No one else builds income protection into carer cover like this. It's a first, and right now it's only ours.

Everything you already trust

It sits on top of complete carer cover

Suitable for almost all social-care-funded support, from giving medication and moving and handling to personal care in the home or out in the community. It's all still here.

Public Liability

Cover for injury or damage to someone's property while you work, up to £5,000,000.

Legal Expenses

Help with your legal costs if you're injured or suffer a loss while you're at work.

Personal Accident

Personal Belongings

Repair or replacement of your things if they're damaged while you're working.

24 Hour Employment Support

A helpline for your tax and legal questions, and the day-to-day of running your work.

No Excess

If you ever need to claim, there's no excess for you to pay.

For a clear summary of what's covered, read the Insurance Product Information Document (IPID).

Frequently asked questions

Income protection, explained

What is Income Protection?

Income Protection is a benefit included within our Personal Care Assistant Insurance policy that can provide a weekly payment if you are unable to work due to accident or sickness and suffer a loss of income.

Who is this policy designed for?

Our Personal Care Assistant Insurance policy has been specifically designed for self-employed Personal Assistants and carers who provide care and support services to individuals within their own homes and communities.

You may describe your role as self-employed:

  • Personal Assistant (PA)
  • Carer
  • Companion
  • Community Enterprise
  • Micro Provider
Is Income Protection included automatically?

Yes. The Income Protection benefit is automatically included within all qualifying Standard and Plus Personal Care Assistant Insurance policies at no additional cost.

What does the Income Protection benefit provide?

The benefit can provide a weekly payment if you are unable to work due to accident or sickness occurring away from your Personal Care Assistant duties and suffer a loss of income.

Standard Policy

  • Up to £130 per week
  • Payable after 10 consecutive days of incapacity
  • Benefit payable for up to 12 weeks

Plus Policy

  • Up to £200 per week
  • Payable after 5 consecutive days of incapacity
  • Benefit payable for up to 12 weeks

Benefits are subject to policy terms, conditions and eligibility criteria.

Why have Mark Bates Ltd introduced this benefit?

We recognise that many self-employed carers and Personal Assistants do not have access to occupational sick pay schemes and may face financial challenges if they are unable to work.

We have introduced this benefit to provide additional support and peace of mind when it is needed most.

Does this benefit replace my income?

No. The benefit is designed to provide financial support during periods of incapacity. It is not intended to replace your full income.

What types of accident or sickness are covered?

The benefit may apply where you are unable to work due to accident or sickness occurring away from your Personal Care Assistant duties and suffer a loss of income.

All claims are subject to policy terms, conditions and medical evidence requirements.

What is a deferred period?

The deferred period is the amount of time you must be continuously unable to work before benefit becomes payable.

The deferred period is:

  • 10 consecutive days for Standard policies
  • 5 consecutive days for Plus policies
How do I make a claim?

If you believe you need to make a claim, simply contact our claims team who will guide you through the process.

You may be asked to provide:

  • A fit note or medical certificate
  • Evidence of your loss of income
  • Any additional information reasonably required to assess the claim
Are there any exclusions?

As with all insurance policies, terms, conditions and exclusions apply.

Examples include:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Injury or illness sustained whilst carrying out Personal Care Assistant duties
  • Pregnancy and childbirth (unless complications arise)
  • Claims where you are able to undertake alternative paid work

Full details can be found in the Policy Wording and Insurance Product Information Document (IPID).

Can I make more than one claim?

Yes. Eligible policyholders may make up to three claims during any one period of insurance, subject to the policy terms and the overall aggregate benefit limit.

How much does the policy cost?

Standard Policy

£69 per year

Plus Policy

£85 per year

The Income Protection benefit is included within both policies at no additional cost.

What other cover is included?

Our Personal Care Assistant Insurance policy also includes:

  • Public Liability Insurance
  • Legal Expenses Cover
  • Personal Accident Cover
  • Personal & Client Possessions Cover
  • 24-Hour Legal & Tax Advice Helpline
  • No Excess
